Halan We Grow – Media Pluralism & Social Responsibility

MasterPeace Morocco successfully hosted a dynamic workshop focused on the critical intersection of social responsibility, media pluralism, and social entrepreneurship. The workshop utilized the framework of the Media Pluralism Monitor (MPM), and was delivered in the scope of the “Halan we grow,” EU-funded project, aiming to empower local professionals to build sustainable, value-driven media ventures.

The event successfully brought together members and activists from project partner organizations across the Mediterranean and Europe, including the Netherlands, Morocco, Croatia, Lebanon, Egypt, and Tunisia. This diverse cohort of journalists, media professionals, and aspiring entrepreneurs shifted the narrative around media challenges, framing market gaps not as obstacles, but as powerful opportunities for innovation and sustainable impact.

Framing Challenges as Opportunities (The MPM Lens)

The workshop began with an introduction to the MPM organization and its mission to assess and protect media pluralism. Participants were introduced to the four core domains of risk—Basic Protection, Market Plurality, Political Independence, and Social Inclusiveness—which served as the foundational diagnostic tools for the entire session.

A key takeaway was the idea that where the MPM identifies a high-risk area (a “gap”), a social entrepreneur can find a viable business model. This framework allowed participants to strategically pinpoint areas of genuine need, such as the underrepresentation of marginalized voices, and design media solutions specifically for those gaps.

Integrating Values and Viability

A core discussion centered on how organizations can balance purpose and profit, particularly in the media sector. The session emphasized that EU values—such as human rights, equality, and the rule of law—are not just ethical standards but essential ingredients for long-term trust and sustainability.

Participants explored real-world case studies, including reader-funded models like De Correspondent and impact investors like the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF), demonstrating how editorial independence and social mission can become competitive advantages.

The Social Business Model Canvas in Action

The workshop culminated in a dynamic, hands-on session using a custom Social Business Model Canvas. Groups tackled realistic scenarios reflecting challenges in the Moroccan media landscape, such as the rapid spread of misinformation or the lack of reliable local news in underserved regions.

Armed with the tools to connect social mission to revenue streams, participants designed innovative ventures, including:

  1. A fact-checking platform focused on decentralized, community-verified news.

  2. A hyper-local digital media cooperative designed to increase market plurality and the representation of rural communities.

  3. An educational content hub dedicated to preserving and promoting diverse linguistic and cultural content, addressing a critical social inclusiveness gap.

Looking Forward: “Halan we grow”

The energy and creativity displayed during the venture pitches highlighted a strong appetite among professionals for media models that prioritize public good. MasterPeace Morocco is proud to have facilitated a dialogue that moves beyond problem identification toward solution generation.

This workshop proved that independent, pluralistic media does not need to rely solely on grants; it can thrive by creating sustainable social enterprises rooted in democratic values and market understanding. MasterPeace Morocco, through the “Halan we grow” EU-funded project, looks forward to continuing to support and track the development of these promising, purpose-driven media ventures.
